On July 10, 2019, the Morris County Freeholders awarded WTHS $70,833 in matching grant funds from the Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund to replace the roofs of the Old Union School House.  Work will be done in 2020 and will be overseen by Kurt Leasure and Julie Kroon of HMR Architects in Princeton. The cedar shingle main roof will be replaced in kind, and the front and back porches with standing seam metal to replicate an early photograph of the building.

This year’s grant awards will help 26 historic sites in 18 towns across Morris County.  The Preservation Trust Fund was established in 2002 as part of the existing Open Space and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund.  This grant follows the Trust Fund’s 2017 grant to restore the windows, doors, and exterior trim of the school house which serves as a museum and headquarters for the Washington Township Historical Society.
