The ruins of the Old Stone
Church in Washington Township are among the most picturesque in all of New
Jersey. As part of an ongoing
effort to stabilize these ruins archaeologist Richard Veit, assisted by Brock
Giordano, carried out a program of limited archaeological excavation.
This fieldwork, conducted in the summer of 2009, provided new information
about the construction of the historic church and a surprising glimpse of 20th
century Long Valley’s historic dump.
The
Washington Township Historical Society presented a program by Dr. Veit on
Monday, March 8, 2010 at the Washington Township Public Library.
The program and archaeological excavation were paid for by a grant from
the New Jersey Historical Commission.
